Fish School

is hard work! we’ve spent the last two days at a hatchery on the Samish River spawning Chinook, some up to 30 pounds each! We have to catch fish with our bare hands and hold them on a table for the teacher to wack on the head. yesterday we caught 560, and spawned them all. pretty violent after all.. ;)

Helvetica

Helvetica, the documentary is one of those films that makes you want to drop everything and change careers. Yep, for the remainder of the evening yesterday i was pretty sure that type facing was it. Worth a rent for sure, it’s about the history of type facing in general, and the ubiquitous presence of helvetica during the last 50 years.

haha, i’m putting the unflattering photo up here, since i’m pretty sure the readership of my tumblr is like . . 2. so here is us at fort flagler, hiking after possibly the rainiest camping trip ever. still fun though, and i got an awesome new sleeping bag, so i was toasty warm.  i would highly recommend fort flagler for car camping, lots of sites right on the water, gorgeous view of the olympics when it cleared off a little. some really cool old ww1, ww2 military stuff, fort flagler was part of the “triangle of fire” put in place to defend puget sound from invaders.

mr. magorium

    was a pretty bad movie. boring, draggy, not cohehesive. thinking about it, i remember reading a review to that effect, but i was hoping it was just talk. natalie portman, is, after all, lovely and amazing.

no seriously though, bad movie.

She and Him

Rolling Stone recommended She and Him, a newer band with M Ward and Zooey Deschanel (from Elf) so i checked them out. She has a lovely voice, and the album out is pretty good, it’s on itunes.

Really good movie - Water. It’s about hindu widows in india. once widowed they have to live lives of deprivation and never re-marry. One of the main characters is this girl who is 8, and was given away in an arranged marriage. but the guy dies, and she still is under the law to stay unmarried and live in this commune with all the other widows.

I just read “The Partly Cloudy Patriot” by Sarah Vowell, she quotes Thomas Paine. Really good read, she’s witty, funny, very intelligent. You may also recognize her name as the voice of Violet Parr from The Incredibles.
